Caterpillar diesel engines are found on a good many medium sized trucks on the freight ways and highways in the US and around the world. Caterpillar is the worlds largest manufacturer of medium speed engines as well as one of the worlds largest manufacturers of high speed engines. Caterpillars diesel engines have ratings that range from 54 to 13,600 hp (40 to 10,000 kW). Caterpillar diesel engines and engine systems are found powering trucks, earth moving machines, mining and construction machines the world over. Caterpillar diesel engine division was originated in 1928, when C.L. Best met a consulting engineer Carl George Rosen to discuss how to equip a Caterpillar 60 tractor with a Caterpillar diesel engine. Rosen had previously used engines from Benz, Atlas and Buda to power the Caterpillar 60 tractors, but had found them to be unsatisfactory. It was this experience that made Rosen confident him and his team could come up with there own diesel engine design that would be better equipped for Caterpillar machines.

Then in 1983, Caterpillar opened a 1,500,000 sq ft plant in Lafayette Indiana which started to manufacturer the largest diesel engines Caterpillar had yet produced. The Caterpillar 3500 and 3600 diesel engine models quickly took over the market. The 3500 Caterpillar series ranges in horsepower from 600 hp to 2200 hp and the 3600 series goes from 1900 hp to 7,300 hp.
